MECHANICAL FINGERS
(week 5)
The assignment was to create a 3D moving object or toy out of laser-cut pieces on a 12” x 12” piece of wood. I was inspired by this moving robot hand I saw on Pinterest so I decided to go for wearable moving finger extensions, but with claws.Initial sketch and prototype
The second drawing is closer to what I ended up going with. The prototype on the right was made of popsicle sticks and cardboard which worked surprisingly well!
The Illustrator file 4 laser cutting:
I used the measurements from the prototype to create shapes in Adobe Illustrator then scaled them depending on which finger each claw would be for, then cut it out using the laser cutter.
I don’t have any behind the scenes photos from when I was assembling the pieces since I was going thru it a little bit. But I put them together using metal wire as hinges then added velcro straps to the base of the fingers so they’d stay on. Might have glued my fingers together a couple times in the process. Please be careful with super glue. Don’t try this at home.
Aaaaaannddddd for the final reveal....
